FAQ

For a comfortable and enjoyable hike at the Great Wall and around Beijing, here's what you should wear:
1. Comfortable Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes or sneakers with
good grip. The terrain can be uneven and steep in some areas.
2. Layered Clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions. A
moisture-wicking base layer, a warm middle layer (like a fleece or sweater), and
a windproof and waterproof outer layer are ideal.
3. Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun with a hat and sunglasses.
The sun can be quite strong, especially during the summer months.
4. Comfortable Pants: Wear comfortable, breathable pants or shorts that allow for
easy movement. Avoid jeans as they can be restrictive.
5. Weather-Appropriate Accessories: Depending on the season, you might
need additional items like gloves, a scarf, or a rain poncho.
7. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays, even on cloudy
days.
8. Insect Repellent: In warmer months, insect repellent can help keep bugs at bay.
By dressing appropriately, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy your hike at the Great Wall
and around Beijing comfortably and safely. Have a fantastic adventure!
The hike at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall typically covers a distance of about
5.4 kilometers (3.4 miles) from Tower 1 to Tower 20. This section is well-preserved and
offers a relatively moderate hike, which can usually be completed in around 2 to 3
hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views.
